Cool White Light and Warm White Light: What’s The Difference?

What Is LED Color Temperature?

LED color temperature refers to the appearance of light emitted from an LED bulb, and is measured in degrees of Kelvin. Unlike traditional lighting methods such as fluorescent and halogen bulbs, LEDs are available in a far more expansive range of color temperatures, and this spectrum includes warm white light, cool white light, and daylight. 

Typically, LED lamps between 2700K and 3500K are classed as warm white lighting, and LEDs between 6000K and 7000K are classed as cool white light; the intensity of the color can be altered depending upon their use, and different LED color temperatures are more suited to different environments and applications.

Warm White Light

Using less Kelvin when compared to cool white light, warm white light is known for its gentle orange and yellow hue. While reminiscent of fluorescent and halogen bulbs, it uses significantly less energy, has improved visual acuity, longer lifespan, and has little to no heat emissions. 

Typically used in home environments to give off a comforting and relaxed feel, warm white LEDs contribute to a homely and inviting atmosphere and are usually utilized in bedrooms, lounges, dining rooms, and even garden areas to accentuate this level of comfort throughout the home.

Warm White Light Applications

Residential Lighting:

Warm white lighting is commonly used in living spaces, bedrooms, and dining rooms to create a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere; making them more inviting.

Retail Stores:

In retail settings, warm white lights can make products appear more attractive and inviting, encouraging customers to linger and shop.

Art Galleries:

Warm white LEDs are often used to illuminate artworks, as they can bring out the warmth and depth of colors while maintaining a cozy ambiance.

Cool White Light

On the other end of the LED color temperature spectrum, cool white light uses significantly more Kelvin than warm white light and is visually closer to daylight – emitting a crisp, white illumination. Just like warm white LED lights, cool white LED lighting uses substantially less energy than their halogen and fluorescent counterparts, and features an outstanding lifespan, leading to reduced energy bills and maintenance long term.

Cool white light is beneficial for busier environments and industrial workspaces such as workshops, office spaces and healthcare facilities due to their exceptional visual acuity and close resemblance to natural light; contributing to a brighter and far more focused atmosphere.
