LED Vs Traditional Lights – How LED’s Are Out-Performing Everyday Lighting

As one of the leading providers of LED lighting solutions across the United States, we here at Constellation Lighting U.S. are proud to be paving the way for energy-efficient and cost-friendly alternatives to typical industrial lighting systems. LED lighting vs traditional lighting offers an unparalleled level of performance; with an expected lifespan of 100,000 hours, a ten-year warranty, and energy savings of up to 65%, your business can expect to make major cuts to its expenditure.

Proven to be significantly more cost-effective, energy-efficient, and provide superior visual acuity, LED lights are becoming increasingly favored for industrial and business environments.

What Is An LED?

An LED also referred to as a Light-Emitting Diode, is a semiconductor device that produces light when an electrical current is passed through the bulb. Unlike other lighting variations, LEDs do not use heated filaments or gas discharge to produce light; an LED emits light when the particles that carry the flow of current (referred to as electrons and holes) combine together with the semiconductor material. Due to this process, LEDs are often described as ‘solid-state devices’.

Extremely durable and versatile, and comprised of a range of semiconductor materials, LEDs can be tuned to a plethora of colors to suit a range of purposes and personal tastes. Some of the main LED materials include…

  • Indium Gallium Nitride (InGaN) – emits high-brightness blue, green & ultraviolet light
  • Aluminium Gallium Indium Phosphide (AlGaInP) – emits high-brightness yellow, orange, and red light
  • Aluminium Gallium Arsenide (AlGaAs) – emits red and infrared light
  • Gallium Phosphide (GaP) – emits yellow and green light

What Is An Incandescent Bulb?

A bulb comprised of glass and metal, incandescent bulbs produce light via a thin wire filament and does so when an electric current is passed through it; producing a significant amount of heat and light.

When compared to LED lights, traditional incandescent bulbs are considered to be far more inefficient, as they emit less than 10% of their consumed energy as visible light. Not only this, but incandescent bulbs are highly fragile, and have an extremely short lifespan; only lasting on average between 750 – 2,000 hours. This is significant when compared to LEDs, whose average lifespan ranges between an impressive 40,000 – 50,000 hours.

Pros of Incandescent Bulbs

  • Natural Colored Light
  • Heat-Producing
  • Dimming Ability

Cons of Incandescent Bulbs

  • Short lifespan
  • High Heat Emission – potential to cause fires
  • High Energy Consumption
  • Extremely Fragile

What Is A CFL Bulb?

Unlike LED and incandescent lighting, CFL bulbs, also known as Compact Fluorescent Lamps, produce light via a gas reaction inside the bulb’s tube. Containing both argon and mercury vapor, as well as a coating of fluorescent paint, the ballast system sends an electrical current through the internal tubing to react with the gasses. The UV rays are absorbed from the ultraviolet lighting by the fluorescent coating and emit visible light.

When compared with the efficiency of a standard fluorescent bulb, CFL bulbs are considerably energy-efficient; using up to 75% less energy in comparison. Not only this, but the majority of fluorescent bulb light fixtures can be interchanged with CFLs quickly and simply, and have a longer average lifespan – lasting between 10,000 and 20,000 hours.

Pros of CFL Bulbs

  • Better energy efficiency when compared to Fluorescent bulbs
  • Longer lifespan when compared to Fluorescent bulbs
  • Easy replacement

Cons of CFL Bulbs

  • Cost more than incandescent bulbs
  • Negative environmental impact
  • Require special disposal
  • Can take longer to reach full brightness
