The City of Cheyenne in Wyoming is known for its beautiful parks and greenway, connecting greenspaces, neighborhoods, and a host of community facilities.
The City’s Public Works Department has identified lighting as an opportunity to reduce operating costs across City facilities of all types. LED lighting from Constellation has reduced energy use by approximately 40% overall and cut maintenance to zero in the first three years and counting.
Since 2017, lighting across various kinds of facilities city-wide are being converted from fluorescent and High Intensity Discharge to LED lighting, with fantastic results.
Advanced Lighting for Aquatic Events
During 2020 and early 2021, the Cheyenne Aquatic Center made the switch from sodium lighting to LEDs. The pool complex at Cheyenne hosts an exciting schedule of events, training sessions, public swimming, and swim parties – a hub of the community. Alpha Series LEDs were installed within the swimming pool complex to reduce costs and improve lighting conditions.
Pool managers wanted to increase light levels while reducing light reflection and eliminate maintenance costs from frequent replacement of expensive high pressure sodium lamps using LEDs. Alpha lights have dramatically increased light levels and provide even, consistent coverage to eliminate distracting reflections on the pool surface. Swimmers now enjoy a more pleasant pool environment.
Synapse Wireless Control – a predecessor to our Alpha-Linx wireless lighting app – gives total control of the swimming pool lighting. Pool staff can wirelessly control the Alpha LEDs, dimming and brightening lights as required, for different events and users at the pool. This level of control, including automated programs and system mapping, works to reduce energy consumption further – by up to 30%.

The first cost-saving project focused on Cheyenne Ice and Events Center for the Parks Department. High pressure sodium lights illuminating the ice surface were replaced with Delta range LEDs. The Delta range is specifically designed for sports facilities, providing remarkably even, high-output lighting. Delta LEDs use a variety of optical angle degree lenses to focus light exactly where it is needed – making the most efficient use of light output.
Delta Range LED lights have achieved a 40% reduction in energy use at the ice rink. The quality of illumination is noticeably superior compared to the original high pressure sodium lighting, ensuring optimum visual acuity for sports and recreation activities.
Since installation in 2017, Delta LEDs have required no maintenance, further reducing the cost of maintaining the ice rink (recorded June, 2021).
Super-Flood Safety for Maintenance Shop
The City of Cheyenne Street Maintenance Shop was next identified as a facility to benefit from an LED lighting project to illuminate the loading area in front of the sand and salt storage building. Constellation Lighting supplied Alpha Series LEDs in 2020, instantly improving lighting conditions and worker safety when loading sand and salt trucks at night during Cheyenne winters.
Alpha LEDs are a high mast, super flood modular lighting range with high lumen output. Angled lensing means light spread can be adapted to illuminate wide or confined spaces consistently and evenly. The improved lighting conditions now provide a safer working environment for maintenance staff.
